Digging Out From The Long Winter

It has been a long winter but it appears we may have turned a corner, thankfully.

As posted earlier, the crew of the Golf Course Operations Department began work on the drain line from the spring house down to the creek. The main part of this project has been completed and the finishing work (grading and seeding) will take place as soon as the earth dries out somewhat.

Most of you are aware that the department has an on going project with the stone curbing; the HCC board kindly granted us the funds to place an order for additional stone. Above you can see that the crew has begun working on cutting out and prepping certain areas for this curbing and subsequently placing the stone. Areas that we will be concentrating on are: three green, eight green, thirteen green, seventeen green and eighteen tee. This is a labor intense process but well worth the time and effort it takes to achieve the look upon completion.
As we say goodbye to winter it is with great enthusiasm that we turn to the work that we are best known for. Some of you may have already witnessed the sprayers out and about on both the championship course and the executive nine. We are spraying RoundUp on fairways in order to stay a head of those winter weeds; also, given the amount of snow we received and the length of time it stayed on the ground we are fortunate that there was little to no snow mold. The crew has begun spring cultural practices on the course and as a result the tees have all been verticut, top dressed and fertilized. Over the next two weeks the crew will begin aerifying and topdressing approaches as weather permits. The greens are scheduled to be aerified at the end of March on the 29th and 30th.

Have fun if you get to go out and chase that little white ball around and keep in mind even if the carts are on the path at least we can see the path now and spring is just around the corner.

Below is a very brief video of verticutting one of the tees.
